commonist

abstract

the commonist is a simple upload client for mediawiki sites, primarily wikimedia commons. it accesses mediawiki using its API and is written in scala.

usage

1. click this link to start the commonist if you have webstart installed. the webstart files of the commonist are signed with a snake oil certificate, so an ugly warning will pop up.
2. alternatively, you can download commonist-0.4.18.zip and unpack it. this will create a new directory commonist-0.4.18. cd into this directory and start the commonist with bin/commonist (on linux or mac os x), or $ bin\commonist.bat (on windows).
   note: on windows, you may have to click away a requester at program startup with continue.

customization

settings directory

when the commonist needs to load a configuration file, it looks in a number of places for this file and uses the first one it finds:

1. the settings directory. this directory is named .commonist and can be found below the current user's home directory.
2. the etc directory. this directory is named etc and contained in the zipfile distribution.
3. the classpath. all files in the etc directory are copied into the commonist.jar at build time.

this enables the user to provide her own configuration files by putting them into the settings directory.

configurable files

• wikis.txt describes available wiki sites to upload to. lines starting with a # are ignored. in every other line, the first word is the wiki family, the second word is the name of the wiki within the family (f.e. the language code) or _ for single-wiki families, and the third is the URL of the api.php of this wiki
• licenses.txt contains license templates
• messages_XXX.properties is a java properties file containing texts to be used in the GUI for language XXX
• gallery_default.bpp is a BPP template used to generate User:Name/gallery
• gallery_family.bpp is a BPP template used to generate User:Name/gallery for a specific single-wiki family
• gallery_family_site.bpp is a BPP template used to generate User:Name/gallery for a specific wiki of a specific family
• image_default.bpp is a BPP template used to generate an image decription page
• image_family.bpp is a BPP template used to generate an image decription page for a specific single-wiki family
• image_family_site.bpp is a BPP template used to generate an image decription page for a specific wiki of a specific family
